Most of the Khirghiz Turks that live in the region of Pamir are from their tribes of Teyit and Kesek. We know that there are some Khirghiz Turks from the tribes of Nayman and Kipchak living in several tents in this region. Khirghiz people had emigrated from the Alay Valley and the basin of Murgap River that are located within the borders of today’s Kyrgyzstan to the Small Pamir region since the beginning of the years of 1900s. There are very different figures within the range of 2000- 100.000 that are stated within the resources about the population of Khirghiz people in Pamir region of Afghanistan. This variety of figures results from the lack of the official census in Afghanistan and the nomadic life that the Khirghiz people lead in these regions. Furthermore, this region has a considerably high geo-strategic importance since it is located in the lands where the former USSR, Afghanistan, Pakistan and China intersect. Before the determination of the political borders, Khirghiz Turks had led free nomadic life in the entire Pamir region. They had frequently changed places among the aforesaid countries due to the various wars and conflicts. This movement of population has not come to an end yet. This situation should be taken into consideration in the course of the evaluation of the different figures stated within the resources.

The only figure that is definitely known pertains to the Khirghiz people that live under the domination of Haci Rahmankul Khan. When the communists that support the Soviet Union established dominion in Afghanistan, these people firstly immigrated to Pakistan in the year of 1978 and then to Turkey in the year of 1982. Their number in the course of the departure from Afghanistan was composed of 500 tents (1700 people). On the other hand, according to the information obtained from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, the number of the Khirghiz people was composed of 293 families and 1138 people among the refugees that were brought from Pakistan to Turkey and settled into their temporary housings between the dates of 3rd.8.1982 -23rd.8.1982. The acceptation and settlement of these refugees into Turkey was adopted as per the Law Numbered 2461. R Dor has carried out researches about various issues in reference with the Pamir Khirghiz people for long years. He states that 1300 Khirghiz people departed from Afghanistan, and 100 persons of these Khirghiz people returned to Pamir region and only 1138 Khirghiz people came to Turkey.

There are still some Khirghiz people who live in Vahan Valley of the Pamir Region that is the homeland of Khirghiz Turks, in other words, in the section within the borders of Afghanistan. However, it is not possible to estimate the number of these people in a definite manner for the time being.
