Pamir region is located in the Eastern Meridians of 71°-76° and the Northern Parallels of 37°-40°. This region covers an area of 100.000 km2 and it is considered as the biggest mountain chain of the world. Pamir region is composed of high plateaux with the average altitude of 3.500 meters and there are some peaks that exceed the altitude of 7.000 meters. The highest peaks are Lenin (7.127 m.), Garmo (7.490 m.), and Mustağ Ata (7.860 m.). The ancient name of Lenin Mountain is Boz Alay. Pamir mountain chain is connected to Himalayan-Alps mountain range. Its length from the East to the West is 400 kilometres and from the North to the South is approximately 225 kilometres. Pamir has a glacier mass that covers an area over 7500 km2. With this glacier mass, it has the widest glacier mass of the world on it following the polar regions. Furthermore, there are several lakes in the sediment basins.
Pamir region is bordered with the relatively lower regions that constitute the river basins of the River Oxus and the Tarim Rivers in the West and the East. It is bordered with the river basin of Syr-Darya in the North.
Silk Road that was used by Marco Polo in the way to Kashgar passed through the region of Pamir.
Big Pamir, Small Pamir
Pamir region is divided into two principal regions: Big Pamir and Small Pamir. The Small Pamir and Vahan Valley located in that region are within the section in Afghanistan. Vahan Valley is composed of the narrow region that extends from the province of Badahsan in Afghanistan towards the North-East. The valley had taken its name from the river of Vahan. This region was specified as the hunting ground. The hunting permission was granted for two weeks in these regions in return for the payment of 6.800 Dollars. There are some game animals such as gazelles, chamois, bears, wolves, etc.
