The most important centre of population in the Afghanistani Pamir is Handud that is located in the entrance of Vahan Valley. However, Khirghiz people live in the central sections of Vahan Valley. They put their animal out to pasture in the summer pastures in summers and in the winter residences in the winters. The distance between the summer pastures and the winter residences is maximum a day journey on a horse. The means of subsistence of Khirghiz people is based on stockbreeding in Afghanistani Pamir. The market place of Khirghiz people used to be Kashgar in the Eastern Turkestan in the past. However, the political events in China prevented the trade with Kashgar in the years of 1950s. Therefore, they started to go to Handud and Kabul in order to purchase tea, sugar, clothes and the other needs. A great caravan is organised to Kabul for several times in a year. Two of these caravan organisations are carried out in the winter and it necessitates a hard and difficult journey. They also had trade relations with Vakhi people. The Khirgiz people purchase wheat in return for dogs, antifreeze, seal, etc. Money is not used in this trade.
