Manastır

Being called as Bitola by Macedonians, the city was called as Manastir by Ottomans because of remainders of Monasteries around it. The city was an important accomodation center during Roman Period because it was on the connection point from Balkan Mountains to Adriatic Sea. The city entered into Ottoman control in 1378 after captured by Kara Timur Pasha. It was used as a based for years. Being one of the provinces in Macedonia after Reform Announcement I, Manastir was also a military center for 3rd Ottoman Army. Among many other schools, Manastir Military Academy was the most famous school build in this period. The school was famous of its graduates who assigned important duties in Ottoman Empire. Mustafa Kemal also started this school in 1895.

Being a modern city in the 20th century, Manastir became the center of military wing of the opposition against Sultan Abdulhamid II. The developments started here and ended with the Second Constitutional Monarchy in 1908. Serbians controlled the city at Balkan War II and peace treatment on 10 August 1913 left to Serbia.

Principal historical buildings in Manastir are clock tower, New Mosque (built in 16th century), Ishakiye Mosque, Manastir Bazaar, historical post office, Manastir Military Academy Building etc. On the other hand, there is a room for Ataturk in the academy building, which is a museum today. It writes at the entrance of the building, “Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who is the founder and First President of Modern Turkey, graduated this Military Academy in 1898.”
