Founded on antic Liknidos town near lake at Macedonia Albania border, the city has the population of 24,600. The city was a clerical center of Christianity in the 9th century and used as a Patriarch center until 1018. After this year, the city stayed as an independent chief episcopacy. Ohri was captured by Candarlı Hayrettin Pasha in 1385 and became a military base for the attacks to Albania. In 1464 Albanian revolt İskender Bey tried to control city, which also resisted Austrian attack in 1788. But it was invaded at last by Serbia and Karadag in 1912 and became a Serbian city after London Treatment in 1913.
Being under Turkish sovereign, there are still some signs of Ottomans such as Haydar Pasha Mosque, Kuloğlu Mosque, Hacı Hamza Mosque, Halvetî Dervish Lodge, Ali Pasha Mosque, Hacı Durgut Mosque and a restored bath.
Muslim Albanians are the majority in the city where there are some Turks in neighborhood villages. They speak clear Turkish in this city.
Ohri lake is more famous than the city. Being called as Ohrid by Macedonians, the lake is 698 meters high from sea level. It is 367 km2 and the deepest point is 286m. The lake makes Ohrid and Struga atractive tourism centers for tourists.
