Mediterranean Region has taken its name from its neighbouring sea. The region that is in the form a line with the width of nearly 120180 km starts from the environs of Koycegiz in the east and extends towards the environs of the cape of Basit that is the end point of the province of Hatay. With its approximate surface area of 120.000 km2, the region covers nearly 15% of the total surface area of the country. The cities of Hatay, Adana, Içel, Antalya, Isparta, Burdur and most of the regions of Kahramanmaraş are located within the borders of the Mediterranean Region. Furthermore, the districts of Köyceğiz, Dalaman, Ortaca and Fethiye pertaining to the province of Mugla are located within the Mediterranean Region. The agriculture and industry are of great significance in the Mediterranean Region. Great attention has been attached to the plantation of cash crops in the coastal sections of the region in the recent years. It has been observed that the wheat agriculture is of great importance in the region. As a matter of fact, two-thirds of the arable fields are covered with grainfields in the Mediterranean Region. The wheat is in the first place in all the cities of the region among the cereal grains and it is followed by barley. Among the plantation crops, cotton is the main source of income in the region. The cotton production in the region is nearly two-thirds of the total production in Turkey. Cultivation of tobacco is observed in the province of Hatay and in some sections of the Region of Lakes (Göller Bölgesi).

The planted fields in which fruits and vegetables are cultivated are of great significance in the Mediterranean Region. Early production of fruits and vegetables has been highly developed in the region depending on the development of transportation in the recent years. The citrus fruits take the first place in the fruit production. More than four-fifth of the production of citrus fruits in Turkey is performed in the Mediterranean Region. However, banana is a fruit peculiar to only this region.

The section that is most rapidly industrialised is Çukurova in the region. At the same time, Çukurova is considered among the principal industrial centres in Turkey. Besides various industrial branches in Adana (particularly textile), Mersin Petroleum Refinery (ATAŞ), Iskenderun Super-phosphate and Iron-Steel Plants, Antalya Ferro-chrome factories and Seydişehir Aluminium Plants can be considered among the principal industrial plants in the Mediterranean Region.

The Mediterranean Region has been the most important centre of tourism in Turkey due to its natural and historical wealth and beauties within the environs of Antalya Gulf. There are various each resorts and hotels within the environs of the Antalya Gulf that are highly respectful to the nature with their highly-developed architectural positions that cannot be even experienced in any other Mediterranean countries.
