Hive Khanate was founded by Il-Bars from Sibani family in the year of 1512. Before this event, Harezm was captured from Uzbek people by Safevi State in the year of 1510 in this region. The Safevi State had assigned Shiite governors to the centres. The people rebelled against these people and Il-Bars who commanded the rebellion founded a khanate with the capital city of Urgenç.

Il-Bars died in the year of 1525. The khans from his lineage defended the country against Kalmuk and Uzbek people. Due to the economic crisis resulting from the drought in the year of 1619, Urgenc was not the capital city of the country any longer and the capital city was moved to the city of Hive.

Hive was one of the centres in which the most beautiful examples and works of Chagatai Literature had been created. Hive Ruler, Ebul Ghazi Bahadir Khan that established dominion between the years of 1643-1663 was also a great historian at the same time. He was famous with his works titled as "Şecere-i Türk" (Pedigree of Turks) and "Şecere-i Terakime" (Collective Pedigree). These works are the works related with the history of Turks and Turkmens and they are included within the main resources of Turcology.

In the period of Ebul-Ghazi Bahadır Khan's sons, Hive maintained its position as a centre of science. However, it was not so powerful in respect of military qualities. In the period of nadir Shah, it maintained its existence under submission to Iran. Then, it had to recognise the Russian domination in the year of 1783.

Harezm khans had ascended the throne of Hive until the year of 1804. Pursuant to the period of Ebul-Ghazi Bahadır Khan that was the last of these Harezm Khans, the dynasty changed hands and Kongrat people established the new dynasty. The first ruler of Kongrat people was Mehmed Emin Inak's grandson, Il-Tuzer Bey.

In the place of Il-Tuzer, his brother replaced him. In the period of his brother, Mehmet Rahim Khan (1806-1825), the country of Karakalpak people that had established a khanate around Aral Lake was annexed to Hive Khanate. However, the Turkish Khanates were not independent any longer. The Russians increased their pressure.

Pursuant to the communist revolution, the khanate was abolished. The last Hive ruler was taken to Moscow and then, he was killed there. Hive Khanate was shared among Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Karakalpakistan in the year of 1924 and thus, this khanate was abolished.
