When Sultan Kilic Arslan ascended the throne in Iznik, there were various bey principalities such as Saltuk, Danismend, Mengucuk-ogullari in miscellaneous regions of Anatolia and Caka bey in Izmir and the beys of these principalities behaved like independent rulers. Therefore, there was not a union of Anatolia. Caka Bey who had determined Izmir as the capital city of his state had won several victories with his first Turkish navy that he equipped in the sea of Islands. Pursuant to these victories, he had made an alliance with the Pecenek Turks in the Balkans and he planned to eradicate the Byzantine emperor. Kilic Arslan had established relationship with this powerful Turk Bey and he had married to his daughter.
The strengthening of Caka that was required to be submissive to him in the capacity of sultan of Anatolia troubled the sultan of Seljuk State. The Byzantine emperor got the advantage of the situation between Kilic Arslan and Caka skilfully and instigated Kilic Arslan against him through various intrigues and he was able to make an alliance with him. As a result, the two rulers jointly set in motion against Caka. Caka who perceived that he could not withstand to both of them went to Kilic Arslan. Seemingly, Kilic Arslan received him kindly, but actually he was executed in accordance with the plan that was determined in the course of the feast (1094). Upon the murder of Caka and the conclusion of an agreement with the Byzantine emperor, Sultan Kilic Arslan assured the surety of the western borders. Then, he advanced towards the east and besieged Malatya that was dominated by the Armenian Gabriel. In the course of the blockade, he heard the news about the advance of the Crusades towards Anatolia. So, he had to foreclose the blockade (1096).
