The Greek forces depended on both the great states and the forces that they had. Therefore, they advanced from Bursa and came towards the section of Inönü. Then, they attacked to the Turkish foxholes (9th January 1921). Turkish forces were one-third of the Greek forces in number. The Greek army pressed against the Turks with its superior forces. However, they could not cut through the front. As a result of the successive wars that lasted for two days, they were defeated and repulsed from the region. At the same time, Çerkez Ethems forces were repulsed in the section of Kutahya. Therefore, the first victory of the western front was won. Upon this victory, the rank of Colonel Ismet Bey was promoted to the rank of general.
When the London Conferences ended up without any result, the Greek forces attacked again (27th March 1921). This time, they arranged an army that was two-folds greater than the previous one, in other words, they set in motion with a great force composed of forty thousands of people. They fought again with our forces under the command of Ismet Pasha. As a result of these wars that lasted for four days, the Greek people were defeated by our victorious army and they ran away. Upon this victory, the fate of the Turkish nation that went wrong was corrected and the faith in the liberation got totally increased in the entire country.
The Greek forces that had been totally defeated in Inönü wars wanted to take revenge of these defeats and they set in motion with forces three-folds greater than their previous army in the summer of 1921. Since the Turkish army had not completed its preparations for war, it had to retreat towards the east of Sakarya River. The enemy kept on advancing. This situation caused an alarm in the assembly. Mustafa Kemal explained the reasons for their retreat in the assembly. The assembly resolved that the task of Chief Commandership was entitled to Mustafa Kemal. Together with Fevzi Çakmak, Mustafa Kemal went to the front in haste and he as able to change the fate of war in favour of the Turkish soldiers. As a result of the severe and bloody wars that lasted for 22days and 22 nights, the army of the enemy was totally defeated in a crushing manner. Therefore, they were repulsed beyond the Sakarya River. As a result of this victory, the Grand National Assembly entitled Mustafa Kemal Pasha with the title of Ghazi and his military rank was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal.
This victory caused great influence and effects. Upon this victory, the prestige of the new Turkish State had totally increased and the desires of the enemies towards the invasion of Anatolia fell short.
The English forces still supported the Greek forces. When the Greek forces retreated from Sakarya, they came to the region of Eskişehir-Afyon. They tried to take positions in the places that they invaded. The Turkish army tried to complete its preparations for war that lasted for days and nights without revealing any information to the enemy. Finally, all the preparations for war were completed towards the end of August in the year of 1922.
