gullari Principality
The founder of this principality was Ebû Bekirs son, Hüseyins son, Sâhib Ata Fahreddin Ali. He had been the vizier of Turkey for 19 years since the year of 1266 until 1285. He had been known as a great statesman, and he had left several charitable establishments. He also had protected the science and fine arts. Sahib Ata had purchased Afyon as a large estate in his lifetime. The city that had been called as Kara Hisar (Black Castle) until that time was named as Karahisar-ı Sahib in reference with his name. Then, it has been named as Afyonkarahisar since there were some other Kara Hisars in Anatolia. The most famous of these is Sebinkarahisar and his older name was Şarki Kara Hisar.
Sâhib Ata had attained the bey principality of the region centred in Afyon as the capital city together with the regency of his sons. He died in Aksaray in November 1285. His sons, Tâceddin Hüseyin and Nusreteddin Hasan had been killed before their father in May 1276. We have been familiar with the name of his daughter as Melike Hatun. His grandson, Semseddin Ahmed Bey who replaced him was the son of Hasan Bey. Ahmed Bey was the son-in-law of Germiyanoğlu. When he was killed, he was replaced by his sons, Nusreteddin Ahmed and Muzaffereddin Devlet beys. Ahmed Bey renounced from his right in the enthronement and he went to the Germiyan Palace in Kutahya to which it had been maternally related. This principality that had constituted a part of Turkey Khanate until the year of 1308 had been submissive to Ilhanli State until the end of the principality. While it had established dominion in the entire environs of Afyon in the beginning, it diminished and was just composed of the city and its environs. Then, it was under the dominion of Germiyan influence and finally, it was annexed to the Germiyan principality. Devlet Beys sons were also influential in the city in the period of Germiyanogullari principality. In some of the books, Afyon was cited as Kara-Hisâr-ı Devle in reference with Devlet Bey.
When Karamanoglu Mehmed Bey and the Seljuk prince Siyavus established dominion in Konya, Sahib Ataogullari had gathered soldiers in Karahisar and set in motion against them.
Siyavus and Mehmed Bey advanced towards the direction of Aksehir. Taceddin Huseyin and Nusreddin Hasan were killed in this fight (1227). Afterwards, Hasans son, Şemsedîn Mehmed became the sovereign of the principality. The region of Denizli was a field of struggles between Sâhib Atâogullari principality and Germiyanogullari principality for nearly twenty years since his period of domination.
When Emir Coban who was the bey governor of Ilhanli State arrived in Anatolia, Sahib Ataogullari principality was among the Anatolian principalities that declared their submission to him (1314). We have observed Semseddin Mehmeds son, Nusreteddîn Ahmed as the sovereign of this principality.
Timurtas who was the governor of Anatolia connected to the Ilhanli State started to advance in order to subdue the Turkmens that carried out holy wars in the western forefront regions. In the course of his progress, Nusreteddîn Ahmed ran away to Germiyanogullari principality. Then, Timurtas had to run away to Egypt (1327). Upon his flight, Nusreteddîn Ahmed returned to his country and recognised the domination of Germiyanogullari principality. He was supposed to have died after the year of 1342. From that date, the lands of Sahib Ataogullari principality were annexed by the Germiyanogullari principality.
