While the struggles for the throne took place among the princes in Anatolia, Selahaddin Eyyubi conquered the Jerusalem (1189). Upon this conquest, there was a new arrangement for a Crusade expedition in Europe. The armies of the third Crusade under the command of the German emperor, Friedrich I Barbarossa penetrated into Anatolia. The sultan had understood that he could not withstand and resist the Crusade soldiers due to the struggles among the princes. Therefore, he let them pass through Anatolia. But the sultan's son, Melikshah who was in Aksehir fought with the Crusades. Upon this war, Friedrich Barbarossa came to the city of Konya and invaded it. The Crusades did not stay in this city for a long time and they moved towards Cilicia in order to recapture Jerusalem.
Sultan Kilic Arslan had spent his last period as a toy in the hands of his sons. Finally, he found the peace that he had longed for with his son, Giyaseddin Keyhusrev that was the ruler of Uluborlu. He set in motion in order to capture Konya from Melikshah together with him. He penetrated into the city through the help of the people. Then, he went to Aksaray. In the course of the blockade, he became ill and he died while he returned to Konya. Sultan Kilic Arslan II was one of the greatest characters of the Turkish history with his political power, military victories, determination and energy and his broad-minded personality. In the course of his sultanate for thirty-seven years, he had partially established the Turkish union in Anatolia and he had endeavoured great efforts for the development of the state and the public works.
