Upon the death of Sultan Kilic Arslan II, the struggles for the throne became much more intensified among the princes. Giyaseddin Keyhusrev, the ruler of Uluborlu who had behaved kind to his father was declared as the crown prince and he was enthroned in Konya through these behaviours. His sultanate was not recognised by his other brothers. While Giyaseddin Keyhusrev struggled with his brothers, he fought with the Byzantine emperor Aleksios Komnenos III on the other hand. His most powerful rival in respect of the throne of the Seljuk State was Rukneddin Suleymanshah who was the ruler of Tokat and who was more powerful than him in respect of the military issues. Suleymanshah subdued his brothers to be submissive to him and advanced towards Konya. Giyaseddin Keyhusrev who knew that he could not fight with him left Konya upon the guarantee of his brother stating that he would not cause any harm to his life. Then, he departed from Anatolia and went to Istanbul (1197).
