VANI MEHMET EFFENDI

He is one of our scientists who gained much credit with the name of Hunkar Sheik in Sultan Mehmet the 4th period and who gave his name to a village in the Bosphorus.

His exact date of birth is not known. His is from Hoşap town in the vicinity of Van.Since Vani Mehmet Effendi was a person who was known for his oration and being speech sheik who addressed to people very well, his reputation was spread everywhere in a short time. He gained favor of Sultan Mehmet the 4th by mediation of Grand Vizier Fazıl Ahmet Pasha and had a lasting credit in state affairs for a long time.

However, since he was a bigot and behaved harshly to those he disliked, he gained many enemies and was sent away from the palace as a result of the inspirations to the sultan and went to his farm in Kastel in the vicinity of Bursa and died there in 1689. Historians refer to him as Vani Mehmet Effendi. He wrote some booklets on Mev'ize. He bears the nickname of Vaniköy since he lived in Vaniköy quarter of Istanbul Anatolian side.
