VANKOLU MEHMET EFENDI

He is one of our scientists known for his dictionary translated from Arabic. Naima wrote that his real name was Mehmed-ül Vani, and Bursali Tahir wrote that his father's name was Mustafa. He is from Van in origin. This should be the reason for his Vankolu nickname. He became an instructor after having studied in Medresahs, and took offices of mufti and kadi. After having worked as Rhodes, Manisa, Salonika, Kutahya kadi, he retired. He was commissioned as Medina Kadi two years before his death and sent to Medinah and died there in 1592.

He translated the book of Cevheri named Sahhah or Sıhah. Such translation known as Vankulu Dictionary is the first book printed by Ibrahim Muteferrika published in two big volumes. He also has books named Dürer Haşiyesi, Tercih-i Beyyinat and the translation of the book by Gazzali named Kimya-yı Saadet.
