He is the person who first founded Gaznevî state. His date of birth is not known exactly. Alp Tegin, was trained from the hassa army of Samanoğulları (Sâmânîler) state, and then became a commander of this army. He was appointed as Horasan Governor in 955 by Abdülmelik Alp Tegin did not support Nuhoglu Mansur, replacing him after his death. Therefore, Mansur dismissed him from Horasan governorate.

Alp Tegin rebelled against Mansur in 962 and took Gazne city with four thousand Turkish soldiers and began to reign there. He defeated the army sent by Mansur to eliminate him and upon that, Mansur had to make an agreement with Alp Tegin.

Son of Alp Tegin, enthroned after him remained dependant to Sâmânîs. Sevük Tegin or Sebük Tegin, deemed as the second founder of Gazneli State is one of the slaves of Alp Tegin too.

Alp Tegin died in 963.
