Sarilli (Sarili) Tribe is understood to have belonged to Oghuz Tribes. Its known that towards the end of 14th century a Turkish Prince called Mehmet Saru, dominated Sehrizor and in the 13th century as well there was a castle belonging to Erbil Regent Muzaffereddin Gokburu. Its understood that the Turkish tribe under the command of Mehmet Saru, was called Sarulu and this tribe has preserved its existence till our age. The name of this tribe,which was recorded as 31 person in the time of Murad III, can be seen in archives documents. Its informed in the minutes, dated 16th September 1892 peculiar to Meclis-i Vukela negotiations about rewarding the chief of Sarili tribe which embarrassed Sunni secthat school opening and appointment of a teacher is necessary for this community.
On the right and left banks of the Grand Zap Water existed Sarili community.They settled in several villages between Musul and Erbil.Sarili Community lives on the bank of Zap Water especially in the region known as Hizir. Verdek Villages,located on the bank of Zap and around it, are the placas in which this community lived densely. Besides, in some of the villages, as well in which Sebekler lived,there were groups related to Sarilar. It is speculated that those who were known as Sarayliyye(Sarayli) in Karata neighbourhood connected to Kerkuk were related to Sarilar as well.
Leading a very scheduled life, Sarililar carry out their religious ceremonies, traditions and customs in secret. Sarililar has an understanding peculiar to themselves from their religious beliefs and their world opinion.
