It has been known that the Russians coming from Novgorod had reached to Ural Mountains in the year of 1032 that spent their time looking for valuable furs and that they were obliged to retreat after subjection to the attack of "Yugra" people. Afterwards, the movements of people from Novgorod against "Yugra" have not mentioned for a long time.
However, the Russians had not totally given up their targets in this region during these years. As a matter of fact, Toktamiş Khan had sent a Tatar commander named as Betkuk in the year of 1391 and this leader attacked to Russians in the city of Vyatka. This event indicates that Toktamis Khan wanted to protect the banks of Kama from the Russian danger. Nevertheless, there was not any force that could prevent the expansion of the Russians towards the Ural Mountains pursuant to the collapse of the Golden Horde State. Kazan Khanate did not have appropriate power to accomplish this target. The factor that attracted the interest of Novogrod people towards the Ural regions was the valuable furs.
When the population of Novogrod decreased, their "colonies" were captured by Moscow. Afterwards, the Moscow government started to land troops in the regions of Yugra. In the year of 1465, Moscow forces were dispatched to Yugra. As a result, the Russians surmounted the Ural Mountains and penetrated into the Vogul region. This movement that had been realised under the command of the Prince Kurbskiy was the first big military expedition that the Russians organised beyond Ural Mountains. Russians defeated the Voguls within the environs of Pilim River and they came down towards Irtish River along Tavda Stream and they arrived in Obu River. A new military expedition was organised in the year of 1499. However, a permanent Russian dominion could not be established in this region due to the far distance and the woodlands and cold weather of the regions. The activities of a merchant-coloniser family called as Stroganov family played an important role in the establishment of Russian dominion in Yugra and Sibir.
