Mirza Muhiddin Bey, special servant of one of his commanders, Halil and Pasha, sent his gun and bloody clothes to Osman Hodja and Sami Bey in Afghanistan. Pasha’s gun was presented to Nadir Khan, the War Minister of Afghans of those times in Bedehşan. His horse named Sultan was given to Miralay Ali Rıza Bey upon his request. Bartınlı Muhiddin, Halil and Mirza Muhiddin Beys staying in Afghanistan as his special delegate set out for Istanbul to give his clothes to his family.

HIS PERSONALITY

Many comments were made about Enver Pasha since his period until now, analyzing him in all aspects. Şevket Süreyya Aydemir, investigating this issue with his book named Enver Paşa, defines, considering the period between 1908 and 1914, Enver Pasha as “The freedom hero of 1908, Major Enver Bey, and Enver Pasha, that is, the only ruler of the empire of this short period, was on the scene as a young, believing, passionate, in more accurate words, a fatalist man who created his fate himself”.

The first thing which can be said about him is that he had an emotional and hasty personality. But there is another reality: Enver Pasha, as from the date he was in charge, retired many officers, by offending some of them and turned the army into a young and dynamic spirit. During this process, nearly 2000 soldiers were dismissed from the army either because of political conflicts or restructuring efforts. Ottoman Army, fought with success and belief against all negative conditions, having been defeated in Balkan war. In spite of all these negative conditions, Ottoman army continued warring in 10 distinct fronts with the same power.

This is why commentators assess Enver Pasha as more of a powerful army organizer than a great commander. Enver Pasha, who could not realize his ideals within the period he lived, reached noticeable successes in his fight to his objectives. However, Enver Pasha’s function could not be understood precisely in Turkish world. He proved to all the world that Turks, if organized good enough, could reach their independence and surfaced the cries of independence and freedom by a race inclined to dread under pressure.

As sociologists admit, if there was not Enver Pasha, then Turkish communities maybe would never think of rising and rebelling and thus would be forced to live under pressure forever. This great commander, as a leader illuminating the path of Turkic peoples, a torch of independence and freedom, succeeded in deserving his place in the dusty pages of history.

ENVER PASHA’S MEETING WITH MUSTAFA KEMAL

The following talk took place between M. Kemal who came from Sofia to participate in the army after Sarıkamış calamity and Enver Pasha: “We were face to face with Enver Pasha a little later. Enver Pasha was weak and pale. I spoke first: * You got tired. * No, not that much. * What happened? * We fought. That’s it... * How is the condition now? * Very good!... I did not want to bother him any more. I started to talk about my issue: Thank you. You have appointed me as the commander of a division numbered 19. Where is this division? Under which headquarters and army? * Well, maybe you can take more exact information from the General Staff. * Ok, then let me not disturb you more. I will talk to the General Staff.

ENVER PASHA’S TESTAMENT IN SARIKAMIS

Enver Pasha had left a testament titled “to the Government” in Sarıkamış. His testament was as follows: To the government

My plan is to force Russians to escape with two army corps nearly two times superior to them and to destroy completely by facing the followed enemy with 11th Army Corps and Horseman Division. I am waiting for 9th and 10th Army Corps and Horseman Division. If they can reach us, I will defeat the enemy. But if the enemy assaults on our weakened detachment, and if they succeed in this assault, this means that the army is destroyed.

Till now, soldiers and officers warred in a perfect manner. They managed every maneuver. If Allah helps, success is definite. If I cannot succeed, I will die with my last soldier. Then, my testament is: I think I have performed my duty and die so. Long live my religion, my land, my sultan.

If you want to help those I leave behind, the salary of my wife Sultan Efendi is not enough. For her prosperous living, I request addition of my chief commander salary to hers and provision of comfort of my parents, and a few charities for my reaching diving mercy, and I pray for bettering of my religion and nation, the only reason of my efforts, and salute those who know me.

Long Live Islam and Ottoman and Sultan Mehmet Khan, the sultan of Ottomans!
