The hero of this myth is an Arabic warrior, who is adopted among the Turks as Battal Ghazi. The main myth arose in relation with the person named Abdullah, who acted very courageously in the wars of Ommiades with the Christians during 8th century.Battal means hero in Arabic, Battal Ghazi is the title attributed to the Arabic hero. After the Turks became Muslims, Battal Ghazi was enriched by previous myth episodes and was included in the tradition of narration. During the 12th and 13th centuries, it was transformed into written form under the name Battal-Name. It was also included in the repertory of the wandering minstrels.

This hero, referred as the Seyyid Battal is very knowledgeable, very religious and very generous. During his struggles to extend Islam, he fights extraordinary forces such as witches, magicians and giants in addition to human beings. His horse named "Ashkar devzade" is also a hero like himself. It is one of the products of common Islamic cultural circle between Arabs, Persians and Turks between 10th-20th centuries and it is integrated with the Turkish beliefs and values by being widespread among the Central Asia.
