There are two common beliefs about their origins among Hakas people. Hakasia is a part of the plateau between Sayan Altay Mountains. Therefore, Hakas people had called themselves as Bucolic People. According to the legend, the ancestor of Hakas people had married to the daughter of the possessor of the mountains ("Tag ezi") in the ancient times and the Hakas people are their descendants. Due to this reason, the mountains have great significance of holiness for Hakas people. One of the biggest rivers of the world, the Yenisey (Kim) River passes through Hakas-Minusin Valley. This name was included within the resources pertaining to the century VI. The second most significant element of the geography is Sayan Mountains. The name of the mountains is derived from "Soyan" Tuvalı word in Hakas language and it means Tuva Mountains. In the ancient Turkish inscriptions, Sayan Mountains are called as "Köygen". There is "Köygen Tahsıl" Hill on the edge of Ani River that flows from Tuva Republic of today towards Hakasia. The name of Köygen stated within the inscription of Tonyukuk lives on this hill today and the hill has a legend much more interesting than its name that should be emphasised in respect of the Turkish cultural structure. At the same time, this legend is related with the origin of Hakas people and even the origin of all Turkish groups.

There is a hill with crests called as Köypa that is located on the edge of Ani River over the Western Sayan Mountains. Köypa Hills are also called as Borus Hill and it is considered as a holy place by each Hakas. According to the legend, there was a man called as Aksakal Borus with the talent of prophecy in the ancient times. Aksakal Borus had foreseen that the world would be flooded. He built an ark. Borus took a pair of all animal and bird genders composed of male and female ones to his ark. Only the legendary Argılan and Garuda (Han-Kineti) birds were proud of themselves and did not get on the ark saying "Even if the world would be flooded, we would fly and escape it". However, when the entire world was flooded, the bird named as Garuda got exhausted on the 39th day and perched upon the bird of Ardılan, and they both were drowned in the water. From that time on, these two birds became extinct. When the waters started to recede, Borus advanced with his ark towards a hill and the ark was grounded on the hill. These hills were Köypa and Borus Hills on the Sayan Mountains. Hakas people had reproduced as the children of one of Borus' sons.

Hakas people were the members of the ancient Turkish religion called as Shamanism by the Russians and Europeans but as Akçağan (Aktanrı- White God) by them. It should be emphasised with great significance that the beliefs of Hakas people included a religious belief similar to that of Hz. Noah included within Koran. Furthermore, we come across with the rumour about the origin of Turks stating that they are the children of Yasef, son of the Prophet, Noah in a similar form like Borus' children in Hakas Legend.
